The Piece
Snake link. No visible joins and no gaps, the metal worked into one continuous close-set band that lies flat against the skin.
21.5 grams of solid 925 sterling silver. Two lengths: 20 inches (51cm) sits at the collarbone, 21.5 inches (55cm) drops just below. This is the lightest chain in the range.
The snake link
A snake chain is built from small plates set edge to edge, each one slotting into the next so that no gap shows and no link reads as separate. There is no wire or mesh running through the middle, which is what separates a snake chain from an omega. The surface behaves like one drawn tube of metal instead of a row of parts.
Fit
Two lengths. 20 inches is 51cm and sits at the collarbone. 21.5 inches is 55cm and drops just below it. The 4cm between them is the difference between a chain that shows at an open collar and one that sits under it.
To choose, run a soft tape measure around your neck where you want the chain to fall. On a 41cm neck, 51cm is the collarbone length and 55cm is the longer one. If you fall between the two, take the shorter.
One limit worth knowing before you buy. A snake chain is semi-rigid, and a sharp fold leaves a mark that a jeweller can only partly work out. Take it off before sleeping in it and store it lying flat instead of coiled tight.
The silver
Solid 925 sterling silver, 92.5 per cent silver and 7.5 per cent alloy. The alloy is there because pure silver will not hold its shape in a band worked this fine. The maker's 925 stamp is on the piece, and it was torch-tested by hand before finishing.
The chain carries an anti-tarnish finish, and a snake band has no crevices to trap anything, so this is the easiest piece in the range to keep bright. Routine care is a soft dry cloth. The finish is not permanent. Once it wears, the 925 underneath darkens the way sterling does, and a polishing cloth brings it back, though the cloth is abrasive and lifts what is left of the finish along with the tarnish. Care
Every piece carries an anti-tarnish finish, so it holds its brightness far longer than bare sterling.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing
- Keep away from perfume, sunscreen, chlorine and saltwater
- Store in the velvet box, away from other pieces, so nothing scratches
- Take it off before the shower, the pool and the gym
The finish is not permanent. It wears with time and contact, and the solid 925 underneath then darkens the way sterling does. Save the silver polishing cloth for that stage. Used routinely, it is abrasive enough to lift the finish along with the tarnish.
