The Piece
The Nocturne Lock Chain is a mariner link in solid 925 sterling silver. It weighs 75 grams. Each link is an oval crossed by a bar, and the broad faces carry a brushed finish with a fine bead worked along every edge.
At 22 inches (56cm) it sits just below the collarbone. This is the heaviest piece CRESTSIDE has listed and it is not a quiet one. The Nocturne Lock Bracelet is cut from the same link.
A workshop in Turkey made this chain. It reached Melbourne through a wholesaler in Rajasthan. It carries the maker's 925 stamp and was torch-tested by hand before finishing.
The mariner link
A mariner link is an oval crossed by a bar through its centre. The bar braces the link against twisting, so a run of them lies flat and holds its line instead of rolling over itself. Every link here is flattened to a broad face, brushed, and edged with a fine bead. At 56cm and 75 grams it reads as one continuous band.
The beading is the only part of the chain that catches light in points. Everything else is brushed flat, so the piece holds a low grey sheen and not a mirror.
Fit
One length only. 22 inches, measured end to end with the clasp closed, which is 56cm.
To check before you buy, run a soft tape measure around your neck where you want the chain to sit and read the number. On a 41cm neck this chain is 15cm longer than that measurement, and about half of any surplus becomes drop. If your neck measures larger, the chain will sit higher on you than it does in the photographs.
There is no second length in this piece. If 22 inches is wrong for you, the Mamba Chain is listed at 20 and 21.5 inches.
The silver
Solid 925 sterling silver, which is 92.5 per cent silver with 7.5 per cent alloyed in for hardness. Pure silver is too soft to hold a clasp under 75 grams. The 925 mark is stamped by the maker, and the piece was torch-tested by hand before it went on the site.
The chain carries an anti-tarnish finish, so it holds its brightness far longer than bare sterling. That finish is not permanent. Once it wears, the 925 underneath darkens the way sterling does, first between the links where a cloth reaches last. Keep a polishing cloth for that stage rather than routine care, because it is abrasive and lifts the finish with the tarnish. Care
Every piece carries an anti-tarnish finish, so it holds its brightness far longer than bare sterling.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing
- Keep away from perfume, sunscreen, chlorine and saltwater
- Store in the velvet box, away from other pieces, so nothing scratches
- Take it off before the shower, the pool and the gym
The finish is not permanent. It wears with time and contact, and the solid 925 underneath then darkens the way sterling does. Save the silver polishing cloth for that stage. Used routinely, it is abrasive enough to lift the finish along with the tarnish.
