The Piece
The same mariner link as the Nocturne Lock Chain, cut short for the wrist. It weighs 45.6 grams in solid 925 sterling silver, with wide brushed faces. Each link is an oval crossed by a bar.
One length only, 9 inches (23cm). That wears relaxed on most wrists and there is no second size. At 45.6 grams it sits within three grams of the Chrome Blade Bracelet, which is the heaviest bracelet CRESTSIDE lists.
A workshop in Turkey made this bracelet. It reached Melbourne through a wholesaler in Rajasthan. It carries the maker's 925 stamp and was torch-tested by hand before finishing.
The mariner link
A mariner link is an oval crossed by a bar through its centre. The bar braces the link against twisting, so a run of them lies flat and holds its line instead of rolling over itself. On a bracelet that matters more than it does on a chain, because a wrist moves all day and a rolling link would show its edges the whole time.
The faces are wide and brushed, so the band holds a low grey sheen and not a mirror. At 23cm and 45.6 grams there is a lot of it on the wrist.
Fit
One size, 9 inches, which is 23cm measured end to end with the clasp closed. It wears relaxed on a wrist of 8 to 8.25 inches, so the band moves as the arm moves.
To check, wrap a soft tape measure or a strip of paper around your wrist just below the bone and read the number where it meets. A 23cm bracelet on a 20cm wrist leaves about 3cm of movement.
There is no second length, and at this weight a loose bracelet swings. If your wrist measures under 18cm this one will hang lower than it should. The Ice Trap Bracelet is listed at 8.25 inches and the Frosted Grid Bracelet at 7.
The silver
Solid 925 sterling silver, 92.5 per cent silver with 7.5 per cent alloy for hardness. The 925 mark is stamped by the maker in Turkey, and the piece was torch-tested by hand in Melbourne before finishing.
The bracelet carries an anti-tarnish finish, so it holds its brightness far longer than bare sterling. That finish is not permanent. Once it wears, the 925 underneath darkens the way sterling does, starting between the links where a cloth reaches last. Routine care is a soft dry cloth. Keep a polishing cloth for after the finish has worn, because it is abrasive and lifts the finish with the tarnish. Plated jewellery wears through to base metal instead, and does not come back. Care
Every piece carries an anti-tarnish finish, so it holds its brightness far longer than bare sterling.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing
- Keep away from perfume, sunscreen, chlorine and saltwater
- Store in the velvet box, away from other pieces, so nothing scratches
- Take it off before the shower, the pool and the gym
The finish is not permanent. It wears with time and contact, and the solid 925 underneath then darkens the way sterling does. Save the silver polishing cloth for that stage. Used routinely, it is abrasive enough to lift the finish along with the tarnish.
